Scientific Name: Quercus
Characteristics: The genus Quercus is native to the Northern Hemisphere, and includes deciduous and evergreen species, there are approximately 600 extant species of oaks.
Oaks have spirally arranged leaves, with lobate margins in many species; some have serrated leaves or entire leaf with smooth margins. Also, the acorns contain tannic acid, as do the leaves, which helps to guard from fungi and insects. Many deciduous species are marcescent, not dropping dead leaves until spring. In spring, a single oak tree produces both male flowers and small female flowers. The fruit is a nut called an acorn or oak nut borne in a cup-like structure known as a cupule (the oak tree produce acorns profusely from the average age of 20); each acorn contains one seed and takes 6–18 months to mature, depending on their species. The live oaks are distinguished for being evergreen, but are not actually a distinct group and instead are dispersed across the genus.
Oak tree are hardy trees with very long lives and can live to 200 years or even more. One of the oldest oak trees on record was in Talbot County, Maryland and was believed to be over 400 years old, another live oak trees are dated over 1,000 years, upwards of 80' in height and over 150' spreads, so generally an oak tree can grow to 40 metres.
Mature oak trees can draw nearly 50 or more gallons of water on a daily basis through their root system. Consequently, they need to be well watered and do not have to be planted in well-draining sites
Depending on the live oak tree age the leaves are normally from 2" to 4" long. Their leaves are very simple and may stay on the tree throughout the winter until new leaves grow in the spring. When new leaves develop, the live oak tree produces small flowers. These small flowers are usually not apparent and are brown in color.
A live oak tree typically only has one trunk and as it gets older, branches can be upright and droop and curve adding a lot of characteristic to the tree and a landscape.
Live oak tree bark is a dark to light grayish color and becomes darker with age.
Oak trees do not produce seed until it is 35 years old.
The oak roots spread for many metres underground.
